It is another name for alcohol in the 1920's era. After the great war many returning veterans were suffering from many mental and physical disorders, Many used alcohol to cope with there problems. this lead to an increasing amount of alcoholics.
Many of the progressives of this era recognized alcohol as the culprit of an increasing amount of crime and abusive behaviors. Progressive figurehead Susan B. Anthony and a few other progressive women went to the white house and demanded that the president should immediately do something about the problems, and thus prohibition was created.
